What is PVC?

In English, "פוליוויניל כלוריד" is known as "Polyvinyl chloride," often abbreviated as "PVC." Polyvinyl chloride was discovered by accident at least twice in the 19th century. It was first discovered in 1835 by Henri Victor Regnault and later in 1872 by Eugen Baumann.

In both cases, the polymer appeared as a white solid in experiments that contained both vinyl chloride and were exposed to sunlight.

In 1920, the Russian chemist Ivan Ostromislensky and the German chemist Fritz Klatte attempted to commercialize the material but encountered difficulties in processing it as it was brittle and prone to breaking.

In 1926, Waldo Semon of the B.F. Goodrich Company developed a method for plasticizing the material by blending it with various additives.

By doing so, he made the material more processable, which paved the way for its commercial production.

For what is it used?

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a versatile material widely used in the chemical industry with numerous applications.

Indeed, PVC is extensively used in the construction industry, where it serves as a substitute for traditional building materials like clay, concrete, and wood.

The harder material is used for producing a variety of products, including interior and exterior coatings for buildings.

It is used for a wide range of products, including magnetic cards such as credit cards or public transportation cards, window frames, vinyl records (hence the name "vinyl records"), pipes, installation accessories, and more.
